Vista SP1

   Posted by: SpectreGadget   in Software

Have you tried SP1 yet? I took the plunge and upgraded both my Vista Home Premium machine (a Core 2 Quad HP m8100y) and my HP nc6400 Core 2 Duo laptop.

They both took a long time to do the upgrade. Definitely don’t kick it off unless you have time to go eat, run errands, or read War and Peace. The good thing is it was very automated and didn’t require any interaction after it was started.

The desktop completed successfully after a reboot or two and seems to be functioning correctly. I did have a blue screen, but I also replaced some existing RAM with higher capacity sticks, so it could have been that. I know that one should never make more than one change to help isolate problems, but I find it hard to follow that methodology.

The laptop; however, seemed to have a problem and now won’t finish booting. I guess I’ll have to reboot with a Vista DVD and let it do a repair, but what a pain! I’ll post more when I figure out how to fix it. I am just thinking about reloading the thing with a fresh copy of Vista with SP1 already integrated…

iPhone Goodness

   Posted by: SpectreGadget   in iPhone

Of course, most of us that have iPhones are anxiously waiting for Apple’s update on the SDK and what that really means for custom applications on the iPhone.

I’ve read rumors that Apple will make it so they approve new applications and make them available via iTunes. (Ringtones anyone?) If that’s the case, I am sure we will see good applications come out. But how what and how much will we see? I believe this will stiffle the flow of innovative and unique applications that we might otherwise see. Look at what the very cool things the current community has come up with already. If they were given the official SDK and a relatively painless ‘approval’ process to go through, where they could make the applications available at will, then I think we would really see an explosion of great apps to use on this already great piece of hardware.

And don’t get me started on the “gotta have 3G”ers out there. I like my battery life just fine as it is, thank you very much.

Welcome to 2008

Ok, so it’s March already.  I don’t do New Years resolutions, so I’m not going to say that I’m going to post here more often as a resolution.  I’m just going to do it.  Or so I say now at least.
